| International Competition for Planning Concept of the Nairobi Metropolitan Region. |

A reputable International Company, consulting Engineering services Private Limited of India has been selected for having formulated the best concept during an International spatial Planning concept for the Nairobi Metropolitan Region in Kenya. The Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development which is incharge of transforming the Region into a modern Metropolis sponsored the competition. The Nairobi Metropolitan Region covers approximately 32,000sq km and comprises of the Nairobi core city and 14 other independent surrounding Local Authorities. Upon its creation in March 2008, the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development was mandated to among other things develop a spatial plan for the Nairobi Metropolitan Region.

It is in this regard that the Ministry organized the International competition with fabulous prizes at stake so as to attract competitive and expertise of International tribute. An International Jury which had been adjudicating the bids submitted by 5 firms for over a month released the results at a colourful Gala held at Nairobi’s Five-Star Hotel, Laico Regency on 8th April 2010. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Government Hon.Musalia Mudavadi represented the Prime Minister Hon Raila Odinga as Chief Guest at the prize-giving occasion. The Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development Hon. Robinson Githae was the host. Consulting Engineering services India Private Ltd which emerged the winner after presenting the best concept was awarded a first prize of Ksh.18million and a glittering trophy, the 2nd runners- up, Center for Urban and Regional Planning bagged cash prize of Kshs.10million while the first honorary mention, ETC company enterprise Africa, got Ksh1million.

The high-level and well-organized Gala/Dinner prize giving event was attended by the Head of Kenyan civil service who is also Secretary to the cabinet Amb. Francis Muthaura, Permanent Secretaries Philip Sika (Metropolitan Development), M. Wamwachai (Forestry and Wildlife), Dr. Bitange Ndemo (Information and Communications), David Nalo (East African Community), Dr.Cyrus Njiru (Transport), Dorothy N Angote (lands), Ambassador Amina Mohammed (Justice, National Cohesion and constitution Affairs), Tirop Kosgey (Housing) and Ambassador Wambua (Education). Others who graced the occasion were the Kenya Government’s spokesman Dr. Alfred Mutua, Members of Parliament Simon Mbugua (Kamukunji), Ferdinard Waititu (Embakasi) and David Njuguna (Lari). Also present at the glamorous ceremony were Diplomatic corps, Professionals, representatives of the Local Authorities, members of staff of the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development and other stakeholders. The General Manager of Consulting Engineering Services Limited Eng. D. Thakur and Sanjeev Benerjee Deputy General Manager Business Development and Raja Singh, the company’s Senior Officer led the officials of the company in receiving the prizes from the chief Guest Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Musalia Mudavadi. The occasion was televised live by the National Broadcaster, The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) for about four hours.
