The Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development has undertaken short term interventions to implement one of the key results areas; that of ensuring a safe, secure and prosperous Nairobi Metropolitan Region through sustained reduction in crime and other adverse incidences including mitigating against disasters.

Street lighting.
In this regard the Ministry has installed streetlights on the Kapenguria Road that connects Uthiru to Lower Kabete in Kikuyu and on Mbagathi way within Nairobi CBD. Crime along the Kapenguria Road has dropped by 80 percent since the Ministry installed the streetlights.

Other areas that are being installed with floodlights in selected locations especially informal (slums) settlements:
          •  Kiambu                          •  Kasarani                             •  Starehe
          •  Kamukunji                      •  Westlands                          •  Makadara
          •  Embakasi                       •  Langata                              •  Dagoreti

The Ministry is also installing flood lights in selected locations within the 15 Local authorities within the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, especially in the informal (slum) settlements.

Apart from Lighting Projects the Ministry recently bought 5 ambulances and 4 fire fighting land rovers and fire fighting accessories which it distributed to the local Authorities as shown below.

The Hon. Minister Robinson Njeru Githae flagging off five (5) ambulances the Ministry has donated to five Local Authorities within the Nairobi Metropolitan Region.

  The Ambulances were distributed to five (5) Local Authorities within the Metropolitan Region as follows;
     1. Machakos Municipal Council                        2. Thika Municipal Council
     3. Thika County Council                                  4. Kikuyu Town Council
     5. Kangundo Town Council

All the fifteen (15) Local Authorities within the Nairobi Metropolitan Region are ill prepared for disaster and emergences even those of small magnitudes. The Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development has therefore undertaken some interventions in the short term to build capacity to strengthen the Authorities’ disaster management.

The Ministry recently spent Millions of shillings on four (4) land rovers fitted with modern firefighting equipment which it donated to the councils as follows
     1. Limuru Municipal Council                           2. Kiambu Municipal Council
     3. Ruiru Municipal Council                             4. Olekajiado County Council (to be delivered soon)
